Keeping the Knife Clean
If you keep a knife clean, you can use the same immediately at the time of need. You can always store the knife inside a case to keep it clean. But you can still clean the pocketknife immediately before using the same. By using a soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush, you can easily remove any dust or residue covering the knife. Avoid using water to clean the knife as it will end up in creating rust on the blade and affect its functioning permanently. You can also use some type of lightweight oil as lubricant, while cleaning the knife with a soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush.
Removing Spots from the Knife
If some spots still remain after cleaning with a lightweight oil and soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush, you can apply a good coat of the oil covering the knife completely and let it to set for some consecutive days. After expiry of some days, use a soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush and remove the rust spots by rubbing gently. If the pocketknife is still not clean, you can use a clean and sharp knife to scrape and remove the rust spots from the knife. But you need to exercise care while scraping the knife to ensure that no damage is caused to the original blade of the knife.
Removing Rust from the Blades
Sometimes you may notice some stubborn rust deposits on the pocket knife that cannot be removed by using the earlier mentioned methods. You will need full-strength white vinegar to apply thoroughly to the knife. Use a soft cloth by soaking it inside the white vinegar and apply the liquid to cover the pocketknife thoroughly. Allow the knife to remain coated with vinegar for a few hours and use a soft cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush to remove the rust by scraping gently. After removing the rust spots, wash the knife with water and allow it to dry up completely. Now apply oil to coat the blades completely and store it inside a case.
