Various Types Of Art Materials
When Earth began spinning, and man suddenly arrived, he could only communicate through stomping, grunting, pulling people with their hair, chucking stones, and growling. Language was not around so he had to find a form of correspondence. Man conceived that it was necessary for him to use more gentle approaches to gain favor from his family. Art materials in the very beginning were terribly crude but, did the chore required of them.
It did no good for a wife to hope her husband would be more sensitive. Heck, there were no words so how could she tell him her feelings? Maybe, instead of the man, the woman was the one who developed a form of picture communication. She might have felt she needed some color in her surroundings, and decided to draw some pictures on her cave family room. But, what was she going to use for this endeavor?
One avenue which was found to work easily was (and is) charcoal. Ancient civilizations found that burnt wood was quite vibrant in making pictures. Not only was the wood great for warmth, and cooking, it worked well in drawing whatever was in the mind of the artist. The problem was it only came in one color, and did not withstand the forces of nature, very well.
Animal fat, spittle, clays, urine, bone marrow, water, plant juices, albumen, and even blood were some of the binders which were mixed with assorted pigments. These pigments were employed as paint, and had a wide variety of colors that could be utilized on the walls of caves, or the sides of mountains. As time progressed, the colors would be absorbed into the rocks.
The equipment that was employed to administer the paint was of a large variety. Twigs, moss, feathers, human hair, animal hair, bones, hands, fingers, leaves, and fiber which came from plants are a small list of what was used as a paint mop. Things did not come easy for our ancestors as they had to do with what nature provided them. If they intended to be artisans, then they had to make everything from scratch.
Being able to appreciate these cave drawings was great but, how in Heaven's name would you get that big stone wall to your neighbors house, so they could see what you had drawn? Sure, you could take a rock for them to view, but if your masterpiece was too big, you would only be able to describe it for them. Since photographs were thousands of years in the future, something had to be made to help take your pictures with you.
Before paper was invented, there were diversified ways to transplant many types of representations. Animal skins, tree bark, and large leaves were used as canvasses to get the sketches from one place to another. It was realized that bark and leaves had a tendency to deteriorate very quickly. After some experimentation a method was applied using such natural products as cotton, wood, and flax to make a fibrous liquid "puree" which could then be strained, dried, and eventually used as a means to carry paintings.
The next time you decide to paint, or sketch a picture, think about those who came up with the idea for all the art materials available in the world. Since you were blessed to be born in this era, you only have to purchase the items from your local hobby store. Now, all you have to do is create!
