In the United Kingdom, for most of the vehicles which are on the public road for

a period of over three years, the Ministry of Transport test takes place which covers the automobile safety, the aspect of roadworthiness, and exhaust emissions.

The Vehicle and operator Services Agency, which is within he Department of Transport is the issuer of the certificates. In Northern Ireland, Driver and Vehicle Agency issue these certificates.

These tests are categorized basing on the type of the vehicle involved for the tests. The following are the categories:

Class I comprises of Motor Bicycles up to 200 cc with or without side cars.


Class II comprises of all motor bicycles with or without side cars. This includes thw vehicles under class I.

Class III comprises of the three wheeled vehicles which weigh no more than 450 kilos unladen weight excluding the motorbikes with side cars.

Class IV includes the cars, including three wheeled vehicles more than 450 kilos unladen weight. It also includes the taxis, minibuses, ambulances with upto twelve passenger capacity, and goods vehicles not exceeding 3000 kilo of design gross weight, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles.

Class V comprises the private passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans, and dial purpose vehicles with a seating capacity of 13 or more passengers.

Class VII comprises of the goods vehicles which weigh over 3000 kilos and includes also the 3500 kilo DGW.

Class VI or the PSV Test includes the public service vehicles which is under for hire or for reward and has a seating capacity of eight or more passengers. The tests for these vehicles are conducted by VOSA/DVA staff at their own stations.

HGV Test is for the vehicles which are goods vehicles which weigh over 3500 kilos GVW and the trailers over 1020 kilo unladen weight or 3500 kg GVW if overrun brakes are fitted with the vehicle. These tests are also conducted by VOSA/DVA staff at their own stations or at VOSA approved designated premises.

The fees levied on these tests are based on the class of vehicle your automobile belongs to. The test basically covers the lighting and signalling equipment of you vehicle, along with the steering(including suspension), brakes, tyres and road wheels, seat belts, body, structure and general items, exhaust, fuel and emissions, and the drivers view of the road.

In 2012, certain changes have been made in certain aspects of the MOT testing.
