Vending machines are traditionally known to sell items such as snacks, drinks and toiletries. However, following on from their success in Europe one vending company has decided to go one step further with its vending offerings.
Vending machines selling gold are being introduced across Japan by vending company owner Makishi Rokugawa as he wants to offer Japanese consumers the chance to invest in something of value and something that he regards is "real."
Drawing on the success of gold vending machines that were introduced in Europe in 2009, Space International Ltd will now add gold and silver to the choice of products on offer from Japanese vending machines.
In an article by the Independent recently, Rokugawa admitted that the reason he decided to introduce these products into the vending market was partly due to the global economic crisis.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that buying a piece of gold was a great way of letting ordinary Japanese people invest in the precious metals market. He said: "Ordinary Japanese need a way to invest in something they can touch."
He also went on to raise questions on the symbolic nature of money and its value. The 35 year old added: "What if you wake up one day and your money is just a piece of paper?"
At present there are only two gold machines in Japan- one is at his company headquarters and the other is at the luxury Imperial Hotel. He now plans to expand into the Hong Kong market with his unique machines.
The machines will offer gold coins and ingots of varying sizes and weights which will all be of different value. The price of the gold will be updated once a day in regards to its value on the global gold market.
At present there are gold machines in locations across Europe including one which can be found at Frankfurt Airport.
