History of medieval Europe features emergence of many countries and people

, among which, probably the smallest one, was Republic of Venice. It was one of prosperous spot in North-eastern Italy, as its main activity was trade and sailing. It could not but draw an attention of conquerors, who strived to take leading European trade point. Many stories and novels describe livelihood of Venetians and their Most Serene Republics. The main topic was struggle of Venice with its attackers, development of Venetian fleet and armory. Specifically, it is impossible not to mention Venetian swords main armory of sailors and shipmen defending their land.

It was clear as a day that ships could not help in wars without skillful seamen armored cold steel arms. On this account saw swords was manufactured in the city. It was a pretty solid blade, a little more than one meter long, with deep notches in the form of saw teeth, being made on the entire length of the cutting edge. The teeth were large and very sharp. Some swords are forged, so that all the teeth were positioned with a significant slant back, on the principle of shark teeth. One can only imagine how destructive and slashing these swords were. Teeth of the blade could break both metal and wood. Biting into the muscles of the enemy, they did not leave any chance to survive. If the blow of the sword was made with sling, the steel curved claws torn flesh and broke bones. To counter this terrifying weapon, conquerors could only use halberds and crossbows.

Venetian gunsmiths were settlers of sword fashion in Europe during the 15th century. In Venice cortelas sword appeared - curved sword of recognizable form. In Germany, for example, the Venetian sword became widespread under distorted from the Italian title cordalech or cordelach, and in Italy, at the end of 16thcentury, riders use cortelases along with usual term straight swords. This type of medieval swords was used in the Venetian schools of fencing as a main weapon. In Venice, that was the most active mediator between East and West until the 17th century, other swords appeared as well. One of them was designed in the form of the Eastern two-handed fencing sword with a curved beak-head handle and a transverse sink-shaped extension.
