Veterinary Career Preparation Opportunities
Veterinary Career Preparation Opportunities
The medical work conducted on animals takes a certain level of training in order to properly help them. Career preparation to become a professional in the veterinary industry is possible through specific programs offered by colleges and universities. Several degree levels can be entered that educate students to work with animals.
The career goals of students will determine which available degree programs to work through. Two main careers are available inside the industry, which includes becoming a veterinary technician or a veterinarian. Technicians assist veterinarians by helping run diagnostic tests, prepare tissues samples, and much more. Veterinarians work exclusively with animals to diagnose and treat injuries and diseases. Each career requires a different level of education making it essential for students to know what direction they would like to head professionally.
Students that want to prepare for a career as technicians need to complete programs at the associate's degree level. Students learn to work with veterinarians by understanding assisting procedures and how to manage the health of animals. Coursework prepares students to perform lab tests that include taking blood samples, performing urinalysis, and helping with dental care procedures. Some major areas of study include courses in nutrition, anatomy, medical math, reproduction, and physiology. Possible career options include:
Surgical Technicians
Veterinary Technicians
Lab Research Technicians
Students that enter careers after this level of training typically work with small, large, or nondomestic animals. The industry does not typically combine practices making coursework diverse enough to establish a career in each area.
Many students use the 90 credit hours obtained at the associate's degree level and enter graduate training inside doctor of veterinary medicine degree programs. Today's competitive field is pushing more students to complete bachelors degree programs. Training that adequately prepares students for graduate school include programs in biology, animal science, and chemistry. Most schools provide students with a pre-veterinary program of study, which prepares them to understand the advanced concepts covered inside DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) programs. Course topics in organic chemistry and genetics are covered in most programs. Career options available to students with these types of degrees include:
Breed Analyst
Animal Care Specialist
Doctor of veterinary medicine degree programs last approximately four years and prepare students to handle all clinical areas of animal care. Health problems and prescribing a course or treatment are heavily studied. Students learn to treat animals suffering from infections, illnesses, and pains. Clinical courses teach students to set a fracture, treat a wound, and perform surgery. Zoological medicine, public health, animal nutrition, epidemiology, and animal behavior are all course topics that aid in the training of students. To officially become a veterinarian students are required to obtain licensure. The North American Veterinary Licensing Exam is a 360 multiple-choice exam that lasts eight hours. All areas of education are covered. Further education includes attending seminars to stay current on the latest advances in the field.
Start preparing for training in veterinary medicine by choosing an accredited undergraduate degree program to complete. Students that complete any degree level can enter the veterinary field as professionals. Agencies like the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) are approved to fully accredited programs that offer the best quality educational training available to students.
