The World Series of Poker is the biggest poker tournament in the world. The tournament started out as an event that was extremely exclusive. Only a few players from around the United States would end up playing in the tournament that was always held at Binion's Horseshoe.
By the 2005 World Series of Poker the tournament had grown dramatically. In 2005, the World Series of Poker was held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino. This was the locations for all but two days of the final event. The last two days of the Main event were held at Binion's Horseshoe. This would actually be the last time that the final table for the World Series of Poker would be held at Binion's Horseshoe.
The prize for the World Series of Poker was enormous. The winner was scheduled to make a whopping sum of 7.5 million dollars. The main event concluded on the 15th of July.
While first place had a lot of money on the line, there was plenty of money remaining for rest of the top 9 players. Second place was scheduled to make 4.25 million dollars, third place would be awarded 2.5 million dollars, 4th place had a 2 million dollar prize attached, 5th place had 1.75 million dollars on the line, 6th place would win 1.5 million dollars, 7th place would take home a substantial prize of 1.3 million dollars, 8th place would get 1.15 million dollars and 9th place would be the last prize of one million dollars or more. The prize for 9th place was an even 1 million dollars. This is interesting, as for years the tournament would grant 1 million dollars to the winner of the whole tournament. This just goes to show how much the tournament had grown over the years.
The Main event had 5619 people entered to play. Each player was required to pay an entry fee of 10 thousand dollars in order to play in the tournament. This was the largest tournament that was ever played in a brick and mortar casino at the time of the tournament.
While in years past it was required that the players win major tournament to qualify, many people were qualifying for the World Series of Poker in different ways in 2005. There were tons of players that managed to win the opportunity to play in the tournament by winning online poker tournaments. There were and are many people that feel like this is a disgrace to the sport. They feel like these players are not as talented as the professionals and that it makes the field worse. Ultimately, it makes the sport more popular and more money is available because of the online players.
The winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker was Joe Hachem. Hachem took home the bracelet and a 7.5 million dollar prize for his accomplishments at the tournament.
The 2nd through 9th place finishers in order were Steve Dannenmann, John Barch, Aaron Kanter, Andrew Black, Scott Lazar, Daniel Bersdorf, Brad Kondracki and Mike Matusow. These players would all leave with 1 million dollars or more for their excellent play in the field of over 5000 players.
