The history of Vienna is quite fascinating. It originally functioned as a settlement of the Celtics. At that time it was known as "Vindobona." Then during the first century BC, Vienna became a military station of the Roman Empire. During its early history, Vienna was ruled by several groups. There were the Franks during the 500s AD. During the next centuries, Vienna would become the seat of several empires. That included the Holy Roman Empire (1558-1806); the Austrian/Habsburg Empire (1806-1867); and the Austro- Hungarian Empire (until 1918).

In the 1700s, Vienna became a cultural hub. This was the era of Beethoven, Mozart, Shubert, and Haydn- who all lived in Vienna. During this era of Vienna, several new buildings and fortifications were also constructed throughout the city. Some of the most prominent structures built included St. Peter's Church and the Kinsky Palace.

The 1800s were also crucial years for the city. Napoleon occupied the city of Vienna in 1805 and 1809. During this era, Vienna also became famous for waltzes, such as those of the Strauss family. Vienna once again flourished as a scientific and cultural hub during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

In 1918, Vienna became the official capital of Austria. It also functioned as German Austria's administrative center, from 1938 until 1945. The Allies frequently bombed Vienna during World War II, which resulted in considerable damage.

Throughout its history, Vienna has become a Mecca for music and architecture. Famous composers who were born in the city include Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus, and Johannes Brahms. Mozart. Sigmund Freud also lived in Vienna for a period.
