Vinyl Vs Chain Link - Cost-effective Fencing Solutions

Both vinyl and chain link fencing are lightweight

, easy to install, and very cost effective at covering a specific area. However, there are other differences between the two that make them better suited for different jobs, and in order to get the best performance out of either type of fence it is important to know what jobs are more appropriate for their use.

Here, we'll compare the two materials in terms of pros and cons, maintenance, and ultimately how they are best used in a variety of applications.

Chain link is a type of fencing made from interlocking diamonds of steel cable. It is very resistant to general force, such as blunt force trauma, but weak to specific force, like cutting from wire clippers or a blowtorch. Chain link fencing is light and cheap, making it easy to install over large areas in a relatively short period of time for a low cost.

Vinyl fencing is made from upright stakes with panels of flexible vinyl stretched between them. It is lightweight and cheap (because of the amount of material used, generally cheaper than even chain link). Vinyl fencing tends not to be made as high or as durable as chain link, although it can be reinforced with steel cables in order to make getting through it more difficult.

Chain link resists weathering and corrosion quite well, but under certain conditions (such as sea air), can be subject to rusting over time unless protected. This process can be slowed by the addition of an anti-rusting agent. It is resistant to damage unless the damage is intentional, in which case it can be easily destroyed with the right tools.

Fortunately, it is also cheap and easy to replace, and can be made more resistant to damage by using thicker cable. Vinyl fencing is not generally intended to stop people from crossing, although it is suitable for small to medium sized animals and livestock.

Chain link is more often used for security and privacy purposes, because it can be augmented with several types of additional security to make it harder to bypass. This could be thickened steel cable to make it harder to cut, the addition of barbed wire or razor ribbon along the top to stop climbers, or even electric current.

Vinyl is typically used to mark boundaries because of its weather resistance, and the fact that it will never lose its color due to sun.
