The famous ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, built the building in 1868, the building is also known as the eighteen offices. According to historical records, the Emperor of Mysore demanded the construction of another building when the palace could not accommodate the offices that had expanded during his reign. The expanded departments of the supreme Revenue and General Secretariat had formed eighteen departments, these departments were relocated to this building, and hence the building was named eighteen offices.

It is distinct for its classical gothic architecture and bold colour and is a prominent attraction to those who visit Bangalore. Attara Kacheri stands in contrast opposite the white edifice of Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the Karnatic legislature. A two-storied building, Attara Kacheri is also known for its classical European design. The deep red hued building boasts huge Corinthian pillars where on the ceiling of the Central Hall is seen an intricate portrait of Sir Mark Cubbon, who served as the Commissioner of Mysore during 1834 to 1861. Also seen behind the building is a statue of him, completed by Baron Marochetti in an equestrian form.

The building is the focal point of a city centre that is characterized by sophistication, history, and elegance. Although it is surrounded by important buildings in Bangalore that include the Visveswaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, the Venkatappa Art Gallery, the Public Library of Bangalore, and the Government Museum, Attara Kacheri has a distinctive, majestic air that sets it apart to represent a symbol of hope of justice and strength to the people of Bangalore.
