Berry Pomoroy Castle

The Berry Pomoroy Castle is a must-visit attraction during your Brixham holidays. It lies about two and a half miles from Totnes Bridge and is accessible by car on an uphill road. Interestingly, the Berry Pomoroy Castle was named after one of its former owners namely Ralph De Pomoroy, who happened to be one of the followers of the Norman conqueror. Ralph De Pomoroy was lord of around 106 manors across England and his name also appears in the Doomsday Book! He had constructed the Berry Pomoroy Castle in the woods.

The Pomoroy family was one of the most powerful families of the early Devonian feudal houses and continued to be in power for approximately 500 years! During your Brixham holidays, you will be more educated on this interesting bit of England's history if you visit this castle. Depart from the holiday cottages early enough to get a few good hours at this castle. Anyone's Brixham holidays become even more meaningful after a visit to the Berry Pomoroy Castle.

Kirkham House

A little away from the town of Paignton is the renowned Kirkham House. It is a fully restored medieval house. In fact, Kirkham House is not too far from the holiday cottages and is easily accessible by bus. Make sure to visit Kirkham House to make your Brixham holidays even more interesting. Kirkham House was built way back in time around the 14th or 15th century. Formerly known as "The Priest House", most people believed that it was linked to the church. Yet another story says that's it was actually constructed by a budding local tradesman as his home.

In the 1960s, Kirkham House was repaired, restored and reopened to the general public. While the exteriors have been fully restored, the interior of the house still accommodates most of the original fittings such as the oak beams and wall carvings. However, it must be noted that some of the furniture and tapestries were recreated utilizing the same Mediterranean style that was employed originally. There is no entrance charge to visit Kirkham House. But, since the English Heritage, a known charity in England, funds it donations are accepted. So, you may want to carry some small change with you from the holiday cottages.
