Visit Stunning Ancient Sites With A Jordanian Travel Package

Seen the Pyramids? Been to Jerusalem? Even gone for a dive in the Red Sea

Jordan offers some of the safest travel of anywhere in the Middle East. With several major airlines flying directly into Amman International Airport, access to a memorable vacation is simple and easy. After landing, visitors can avail themselves of stupendous Jordanian hospitality with a stay at a hotel or bed-and-breakfast in fast-paced Amman or more sedate Madaba, about 40 minutes from the airport.

Whether travelers choose to stay in Jordan's capital, a visit to Amman is essential to a satisfying Jordanian travel package. Contrasting with the city's contemporary urban life is its most famous tourist attraction, The Citadel. This complex of historic sites is located on Jabal al-Qal'a, believed to contain civilization's earliest manmade fortifications. In addition, the world's three monotheistic religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, are all represented here in a microcosm of Middle East culture and faith.

There's even more to The Citadel, with tombs dating to the early Bronze Age around 3,000 BCE, the Temple of Hercules, the palace of the Umayyad emperors and the Byzantine Church. Experienced travelers suggest that the best way to visit The Citadel is to hire a taxi for a few hours. The driver will wait for you, and you'll be assured of transportation when ready to return to the hotel.

Nearby Madaba may have a slower pace of life than bustling Amman, but its sights are no less fascinating. Visitors here should start their sight-seeing day with a visit to the Mosaic Map of the Holy Land at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. Built in the 6th century CE, the map was fashioned from two million separate pieces of stone, making it a major historic treasure. Nearby the church is Madaba Archeological Park, administered by the Order of Franciscans Minor (Franciscan Friars), which emphasizes the preservation of ancient artifacts.

No Jordanian travel package would be complete without a visit to fabled Petra, the city in the sand. Petra is about a 2-1/2-hour drive from Amman, and is best visited in the company of a tour group for safety and ease of travel. In fact, an overnight visit to Petra would really be best, because it allows travelers to view its famous sights during the times of day they're best lit by the sun. Unlike some tourist attractions, there are no electric lights at these ruins.
