Visit Yazd Friday Mosque When You Visit Iran

Known for its historical importance, the Yazd Friday Mosque has been in existence since the twelfth century

. But there has been a great transformation in the original monument which was later modified in 1324 by the IlKhanids. The mosque as it stands today is a reminder of the reign of the Muzaffarids who completed the monument in 1365. There were still further additions to the mosque during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. You can get a glimpse of the work done through the ages in the courtyard of the mosque.

Excellent Architecture

When you visit Iran and go through its history, you will come to know that the iwan which exists today is the contribution of Sayyed Rukn ad-din Muhammad. There are upper galleries, prayer halls and a domed chamber in the iwan. The Yazd Friday Mosque is known for its architectural greatness and beautiful decoration. It is one of the monuments based on which the other mosques in Yazd were modeled later on.

One of the main features of this mosque is the rectangular open court. There are pointed arch vaults all around the court. The main iwan is to the east and the domed chamber to the south of the court.

Grand Design

There are galleries on top of the iwan which help you to have a view of the city outside. There are two distinctive minarets on the eastern portal iwan. There is a domed vestibule too which leads to the mosque from the eastern side. Mud brick is the material used to build the prayer halls. There are large windows placed at a great height in the halls which let in the bright sunlight. This brings out the beauty of the decorations in the chamber.

The dome has been constructed out of plain and glazed terracotta which has a complex geometric arabesque at the middle of the dome. A mihrab was installed after completing the decoration of the dome.

Although the Yazd Friday Mosque was initiated by the IlKhanids, the decoration was done later under the Muzaffarid rule. The techniques used range from carved terracotta to glazed tile mosaic which is cleverly combined to present a rich and diverse mixing of color and materials bringing out the excellence in the craftsmanship.
