Visiting Hawaii - Iolani Palace - An Elite Of Its Own

When visiting Hawaii, the island of Oahu is a place where those who see furtherand appreciate deeply will indulge. A place for thosefolks visiting Hawaii who are more attune with refinementsis 'Iolani Palace. It was ordered by King David Kalakaua who opened it in August 1882. In the XXI century, this palace still remains the only royal residence in the U.S.A. Architects were inspired by the American Florentine style, and it had electric power four years before the White House did. As expected, it was visited by royals of the world and famous people.

Upon King Kalakaua's death, the palace became the official residence of her sister Queen Lili'uokalani. She was the last monarch of Hawaii until theHawaiian Monarchy was overthrown. Officials from the new Provisional Government inventoried 'Iolani Palace contents, and everything of no value to the new regime was auctioned offincluding all the Monarchy jewelry.

Today, "The Friends Of 'Iolani Palace" remaininvesting efforts and resources attempting to find, regain, and restore as many Hawaiian Monarchy belongings as possible. The efforts allowed several pieces to berecovered from about 36 states of the American Union, and 4 foreign countries. For instance, fine china were returned from Australia; a table was found and returned from the State of Iowa Governor's mansion; and even a chair was discovered in a Honolulu thrift store. Those people are actively attempting more recoveries.

Just to give another glance ~and yet another reason why the unique 'Iolani Palace is worth visiting when in Hawaii~ the jewelry used by the Hawaiian Monarchy is as unique as the palace itself. The collection displays the brooch Queen Lili'uokalani bought in London in 1887 when attending the celebrations of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Her brooch contains 159 diamonds. The King of Siam [a country today known as Thailand] personally gave Queen Lili'uokalani a pair of coral earrings also on display. The agenda of exquisite pieces goes on and on.

When visiting Hawaii, and the island of Oahu, the list of reasons why one should walk up the stairs of a royal residence in an elite of its own is extensive. Those who can see furtherand appreciate deeply never regret it. It is because... "Beauty is there, but not everybody can see it"Confuciustold us some 15 centuries ago.
