Voice Procedure For 2 Way Radios

Communicating on a two way radio may seem as simple as pushing a button and talking

. However different groups both private civilians and public employees (police, firefighters, army , etc) have specific communication procedures that are meant to ensure radio communication is concise and easy to understand.

Many different organizations use overlapping terms, however there is differences. In addition, some organizations may include terms or code that only their members know in order to ensure information is safeguarded. For example, in World War 2 when the U.S. army used the Navaho language as a basis for a code used in the pacific theater. This code immortalized in the movie wind talkers and shows how important code can be in 2 way radio communication.

Whether youre an amateur radio enthusiast or work in the private or public sector, most radio communication that you may participate in or may be listening to will not include secret terms. So you may just need to go over simple voice procedure rules and understand the meaning of some of the most used terms. Also one must realize that when different organizations or service providers may use very different terms so you must be familiar with these terms and be able to use them if you are in an emergency and or stressful situation.

One of the most used yet misunderstood 2 way radio terms is Roger. One of the reasons why it is often used in the wrong context is that depending on whose communicating it , the terms has different meanings. For instance, usually the term Roger means that I understand what you said. However, in aviation communication Roger actually means I heard what you said but I dont necessarily understand what you meant. Therefore, in aviations 2 way radio communications one would have to say acknowledge to mean I heard what you said and I understand.

If youre a radio enthusiast, or your about to start a job in a sector thats uses 2 way radio communication, I would recommend that you get familiar with the terms your sector uses. If your employer doesnt give you the terms Google them you may be surprised at the amount of terms that appear.
