Voip Peering Could Give Voip Users Additional Perks
VoIP Peering is a win-win situation for carriers as well as customers
. For carriers, it helps lower costs as there are no call routing charges for forwarding on PSTN networks. For customers, it provides better audio quality as there is no transcoding between VoIP and PSTN.
What is it all about?
VoIP Peering enables a hosted VoIP solution to communicate with SIP based devices, be it softphones, hardphones, a SIP proxy or SBC. This can occur on layer 2 or on layer 5. The IETF SPEERMINT group is working on defining the layer 5 Voice peering standards.
Though this technology is often confused with SIP Trunking, the two are actually drastically different from each other. Voice peering is mainly used for operators to talk to each other's networks and to ensure that VoIP traffic is kept on IP backbone instead of pushing it to PSTN.
Benefits
VoIP users benefit from seamless service offerings and this technology extends these services beyond the operator's own subscribers. Furthermore, it offers high performance routing at the fraction of a cost.
By avoiding the PSTN, VoIP Peering helps carriers to lower their operational costs, improve audio quality and allows them to offer next generation IP-enabled services to customers.
Techniques
VoIP Peering can be implemented using any of the following three approaches.
1. Direct Peering is the most simple and straight-forward implementation. This is especially true for large enterprises and operators. This approach is more suited for On-premise VoIP solutions rather than hosted VoIP solutions.
2. The Hub Method is preferred by smaller companies and operators. The modus operandi of the Hub method is that a third party manages the interconnections. It enables enterprises, companies and carriers to connect with each other by placing the interoperability burden on the Hub provider. Using this approach, the number translation is managed by HUB provider using techniques like ENUM. Many hub providers also offer SIP normalization to manage protocol variations in the network equipment. This approach can be used with Hosted VoIP solutions as well as On-premise VoIP solutions.
3. The 'Federation Method' involves a closed group based on an agreed set of protocols and security policies. Using this approach, operational expenses are reduced. Given its strict closed group requirements, this approach is more suited for On-premise VoIP solutions rather than hosted VoIP solutions.
With growing advances in VoIP technology, the adoption of Multilateral VoIP Peering is on a rise. It models the exchange of voice traffic as a nearly free exchange and uses ENUM/SRV for routing/ lookup.
