The gas moves in a whirlwind motion at the speed of 1,000,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) into the long tube, in which the outer part of the vortex is the hot gas exhausted through a conical valve at the end of the tube. The inner gas is then blocked and heads back to the opposite direction and is exhausted as the cold gas. The temperature of the gas released by vortex is adjustable through the control valve attached at the hot gas nozzle. Cold gas can be as low as -50 Fahrenheit (-46 Celsius) and as high as 260F (127 C).

For spot cooling needs and other commercial applications such as machine operations cooling, mold tools cooling, camera lens cooling and cool soldering, vortex tube is known for reliable performance and convenience. This mechanical device comes in various sizes and materials. However, it is advisable to purchase stainless steel-made to avoid corrosion.
