WHY NUTRITION IS Important
For us to better know Malnutrition we first need to define the two types of malnutrition the over-nutrition and the under-nutrition. You are malnourished or suffer from under-nutrition if your body lacks adequate calories and proteins our body needs to function and grow, people are also considered malnourished or suffering from over-nutrition if you have or consume to much calories (it is just another term for overweight).
Protein - They are involved in virtually all cell functions and in fact, the human body is about 45% protein.
Carbohydrates - They form a major part of your food and help a great deal in building your body strength, by generating energy.
Lipids - They form biological membranes with different functions. Their primary purpose in the body is energy storage.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins are needed in small amounts to help the body with chemical reactions
Minerals are inorganic substances in other words they are man made and they regulate processes within the body.
Below is a diagram of the daily required in take of our body on the different nutrient
Nutrition is vital for our survival . It is interrelated with other fundamental needs such as physical, physiological, emotional, sociological and economic factors.
What is Nutrition? Nutrition is the study of food in relation to health of an individual, community of society and the process through which food is used to sustain life and growth. It is the mixture of processes by which a living organism gets and utilizes materials or substances needed for the upkeep of its functions and for growth and renewal of its components.
A person, who observes proper nutrition by eating the right kind and amount of food, at the right time, has a working knowledge about nutrition.
Since nutrition is about food, how do we understand food? Food is any compound, organic or inorganic, when ingested or eaten, nourishes the body by building and restoring tissues, providing heat and energy, and managing body processes.
It is a common observation that when a person is supplied a food which is new to him/her, his first question is: "Is it delicious or tasty?" Seldom do we say: "Is it nutritious or good for my health?"
Ideally, food must have the following qualities:
It is safe to eat.
It is nourishing or nutritious.
Its palatability factors satisfy the consumer.
It has satiety value.
It offers variety and planned within the socio-economic context.
It is free from toxic agents or does not contain substances deemed deleterious to health
When a person says" this food is nutritious, she/he is implying that the food contains more nutrients other than calories or it is a food that has high nutrient density.
Why is it important that food must possess the necessary nutrient? Nutrient is a chemical component needed by the body to provide energy, to build and repair tissues, and to regulate life processes. Some are manufactured in the body, a process called biosynthesis, while some are made in the laboratory. These are man-made nutrients useful for research or therapeutic purposes.
