Wal-mart To The Rescue

With everything moving to digital these days, what on earth are we supposed to do

with all of our DVDs and Blu-Ray discs? Rip them a hard drive and pray we have enough space? What happens if that hard drive crashes? I have to do the same thing all over again? Cue Wal-Mart. Announcing that it will now provide a Disc-to-Digital program to convert your old DVDs by using VUDU, the company it acquired years ago, Wal-Mart is bring digital movies to the masses.

Anthony Ha, of Tech Crunch writes:

At a press conference today in Los Angeles, the company announced that, as rumored, its launching a new program called the Disc to Digital service. Starting on April 16, anyone can bring their DVD collection into a Walmart store, and copies of each movie will be loaded onto your account on VUDU, the online video service that the retailer acquired two years ago. Standard definition DVDs will be converted into standard definition videos and Blu-rays will be converted into high-definition, for $2 each. You can also upgrade a standard DVD into an HD copy for $5.

This is exactly what has been needed to bring digital media to the masses. With a retail footprint as large as Wal-Marts, its reach is beyond compare. Lots of folks are resistant to change and I still purchase a Blu-Ray disc or a DVD when I can. I definitely have a Netflix account, and that works for rentals, but what if I want to watch a movie over and over again, even when Im not near my Xbox, or have access to a Netflix app? With Wal-Marts new service, you can store your titles in the cloud and reach them anytime you want them. No more worrying about hard drive crashes, or taking your hard drive with you to watch a movie at a buddys house. Naturally, since the major studios are behind this move, theres going to be an increased push for users to embrace Ultra-Violet, which is arguably the studios answer to piracy. Being able to download titles, stream them, and share with up to 6 members of your family, this seems like a grand idea. The only problem is content. Ultra-Violet simply doesnt have a plethora of choices, despite new releases being announced regularly.

Speaking of Ultra-Violet, Im wondering how this partnership is gonna play out? If I bring a disc to Wally World and have them digitize it for me, I should be able to stream that to any of my devices that I want. I wonder if there will be limitations placed on this or not. Navigating the anti-piracy landscape can be tricky, and it looks like the studios are doing the best they can. Hearing the announcement today from Americas favorite place to shop just made life that much sweeter. I cant wait to take all my hard copies, digitize those and be able to stream them from wherever I am (providing theres wi-fi, haha). Thank God for the Waltons.
