Walking Associated with Lower Instance of Stroke in Women
Walking Associated with Lower Instance of Stroke in Women
The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the natural preventatives available for strokes in women. Here is their report:
Favorable Odds
If you were offered a magic pill which guaranteed to lower your chance of having a stroke by 30-37% without any side effects, would you take it? Of course you would! Your only question may be "How much does it cost?"
The bad news is that as yet there is no "magic pill" but there is something all women can do to lower the risk of suffering a stroke by up to 37%, and it is absolutely free!
A new study has recently been published in Stroke, the Journal of the American Heart Association. It found thatwomen who walked more than two hours every week at a brisk pace of 3 miles per hour or more had a significantly lower risk of suffering a stroke than women who did not.
The research showed that women who walked at a brisk pace had a 37% lower chance of stroke, while women who walked for two hours or more per week, even at a regular pace, lowered their stroke risk by 30%, compared to women who did not walk for exercise.
Just A Brief Walk Can Help
Exercise has long been known to be essential for maintaining a fit and healthy body, but now something as simple as dedicating a couple of hours a week to walking can pay huge rewards health-wise.
Other reports have suggested that walking may be more effective at combating strokes than more vigorous forms of exercise, which is good news for those who cannot face an hour of aerobics in the gym!
This long-term randomized controlled trial covered the health and lifestyles of 40,000 women aged 44 or older for 12 years. Adjustments were made to account for the influence of confounding factors.
Age, weight, smoking, diet, menopause, number of children and medical history were all taken into account using an analytical method called survival analysis to allow for variables.
Making Distinctions
When assessing the connection between walking and the risk of stroke, the researchers reported a significant trend between increased time spent walking, increased pace of walking and the overall risk of a stroke, although this association was weakened when the analysis was fully adjusted for confounding factors.
When analyzing types of stroke separately, between hemorrhagic strokes which are caused by bleeding, and ischemic strokes which are caused by a clot, the trend seemed only apparent for hemorrhagic strokes.
Compared to the women who did not walk regularly, those who walked for two or more hours a week were 0.43 times less likely to have a stroke.
