Atlanta on a budget

Atlanta on a budget

Don't worry about spending too much money in Atlanta. Cutting costs is possible, beginning with airline tickets. Airfare is the first place you can look to save money. Inexpensive flights to Atlanta are readily available for those who know where to look. In order to find these great deals, search the Internet, especially on travel websites that specialize in finding the very cheapest prices on travel bundles that include airfare, accommodation and a rental car. In addition, there are many inexpensive or free activities and sites in Atlanta. Some of these sites include Centennial Olympic Park, Castleberry Hill, Piedmont Park and the Sweet Auburn District. Another way to save money on your trip is to purchase something like Atlanta CityPass, which guarantees less expensive tickets for Atlanta's top tourist sites. Also, trying some delicious food in one of Atlanta's many restaurants is something that can be done on a budget. Check out Atlanta Fish Market in Buckhead, Ecco in Midtown and Ray's in the City in Downtown for great discounts on food.

Great Atlanta restaurants

It isn't a surprise that a major city like Atlanta would have a plethora of dining opportunities. From world-class fine dining to regional cuisine, no one can possibly go hungry in one of the South's favorite cities. If shrimp-n-grits, fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese, collard greens and po' boy sandwiches sound delicious or at least intriguing, don't miss restaurants like Watershed, a Decatur restaurant that has received accolades for its exquisite Southern cooking. Other Southern favorites are Dogwood, located in Midtown, and Home Restaurant and Bar, which prepares its dishes with ingredients grown on a local farm. When you've had your fill of Southern home cooking, check out Atlanta's international offerings, which are aplenty in Midtown and Downtown. For the less adventurous travelers, Atlanta does have a good selection of familiar national restaurants including Ruth's Chris Steak House. Whatever your tastes, dining out is one of the best parts of a great vacation and can easily be worked into even the tightest of budgets by saving money on affordable Atlanta airfare and accommodation.

When to travel

Planning a trip to Atlanta? There's never a bad time to go, but the spring and fall months generally offer the most mild weather and the loveliest foliage. During spring months, Atlanta lives up to Margaret Mitchell's fanciful descriptions from Gone With the Wind, with its pretty blossoming dogwoods and azaleas. In addition, springtime means nice warm weathernot too terribly hot like it can be in July or August. The fall is also very beautiful in Atlanta, which is a fantastic time to take day trips outside of Atlanta to check out the autumn foliage. Of course, winter is nice in the city too if your heart's not set on a white Christmas. Don't let the heat of summer deter your Atlanta summer vacation; the summer months are bustling with activity, and there's always a day-trip to the beach at Tybee Island near Savannah for cooling off!

Sports in Atlanta

Sports enthusiasts will love the wide variety of athletics offerings in Atlanta. Six pro teams play in Atlanta, including the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, who play in the Georgia Dome; MLB's Atlanta Braves, who play at Turner Field; NBA's Atlanta Hawks, WNBA's Atlanta Dream and NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, who all play in Philip's Arena; and last but not least, MLS's Atlanta Silverbacks, who play at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Black College Football Hall of Fame is in Atlanta, and the College Football Hall of Fame will open in the city in 2012. College football fans can check out four-time national champions Georgia Tech, or take a day trip to nearby University of Georgia in Athens. Atlanta hosts Chick-fil-A Bowl, which is played in the Georgia Dome between teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). For motor sports fans, the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Road Atlanta and the Georgia Dome host races and other motor sports events year round.
