When folks consider growing grapes, they seem to have the impression that you need to have a very large piece of land. Of course if you are proposing on making it an occupation then this would be correct.
On the other hand, if you are growing grapes as a hobby, many people today are discovering that they can grow grapes in small pots in their gardens.
Two years ago I was fortunate enough to be able to go to South Africa, arguably some of the best varieties of grapes in the world. If you have ever made the trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town, you will know that on the outskirts of Cape Town are a many famous vineyards, this is an education in it self.
I spent some considerable time talking to the people that own, and worked in the vineyards, which prompted me to write this article.
I would just like to mention just how helpful they were, and they presented me with the opportunity to taste many different wines, plus they gave me a full explanation of the grapes made to produce it.
What I did not realise is, just how many different varieties of grapes there really are, and just how much commitment is required in order to become successful, if you are looking for a challenge, you have definitely found one if you are planning on growing grapes to make wine.
Primarily the time element involved before you are able to reap your first crop can be as much as five years, depending to where you are located.
Another key point to take into consideration is the zone rating of the land. Most regions of land have a zone rating. This information according to experts in grape growing is essential, in order to reap a good crop, and make a good quality wine.
The next issue is pruning, this must take place several times per year however, take caution do not carry out this until the leaves begin to grow. Experts state that pruning should be finished up by December each year.
The condition of the soil is another significant concern determine if there is any magnesium or chlorophyll to be found in the soil? Phosphates are very effective in respect to improving the health of your vines, and excellent for the development of roots of the vines.
And finally location, choosing a south facing position if possible grapes love sunlight.
