Want To Make Your Workout Groove?

For most people one of the hardest things about exercise is motivation

. While you know that your body can run 5 miles, that last mile just doesnt seem likely when you feel like giving up. And while you know that the gumption should come from within, lets face it, we can all use a little help in the motivation department. Adding music to your workout makes a perfect combination, since even a tedious run can seem pleasurable when you add your favorite song.

Whether youre at the gym lifting weights or running a marathon, grooving to exciting music can help encourage you and boost your energy. As much as possible, the beats per minute (BPM) of the song should match the pace of your workout. So if youre running, listen to a song that matches the pace of your stride. The more in-tune your music is with your bodys cadence, the more effective it will be in keeping you moving.

Workouts almost always seem longer and more tedious when they go in one long, continuous stretch. Luckily, another benefit of adding music to your workout is that the different songs break up the time into smaller segments. A thirty minute run certainly seems shorter when you think of it as only 10 songs! Plus, with the convenience of iPods, you can always change the song if its not inspiring enough.

Costas Karageorghis, a sports psychologist at Brunel University in Britain, has studied the connection between ears and feet for twenty years. Karageorghis recently sponsored a half-marathon in London called Run to the Beat, in which 9,000 runners ran to the beat of their own music mix, aided by their benefactors scientific selection of songs. He asserts that there are four contributing factors in a song's motivational ability: rhythm response, musicality, cultural impact and association. These internal and external factors work together to provide a 15% improvement in endurance, says Karageorghis.

Another recent study, performed by researchers at Liverpools John Moores University, considered what may happen if a group of cyclists all pedaled to the same song. How would this change the outcome from when each rider chose his own song? The researchers decided to run three different tests, with the song playing first at the normal speed, and then either faster or slower by 10 percent. While the riders did not notice the change, amazingly, it did affect their performance. Apparently, the faster the music, the more the riders pace increased. Thus, researchers concluded that exercisers increase or decrease their pace and work effort as the tempo of their music changes.
