I'm here basically to drive you away from what could be a costly two year annoyance and mistake
. I'm here to tell you why you would be wise to choose another model Android OS phone versus the Motorola Backflip.
In the beginning I was so excited as I upgraded from my bland, generation old Blackberry Curve 8310 with an unlimited data plan to the Motorola Backflip, which was a far richer internet experience. Full internet browser, great apps like Facebook and Gmail, and a really sweet Android user interface. This excitement will be short lived. Read on...
After the newness wore off, I began to dig deeper into the phone functionality. After several attempts to use the voice activated dialing I finally gave up. Now I am a US citizen with a California accent (aka no accent) and not a single time did the Motorola Backflip correctly recognize the contact I called out.
The following week after I upgraded to the Motorola Backflip I brought it to work, excited to compare apps with my peers who already had Android phones. One of my colleagues has an app called MapMyRun. I was really happy to learn that I would be able to track my runs through GPS. So I proceeded to the Android Marketplace to download the app and it was nowhere to be found. It was then that I found out that the Motorola Backflip is running an old version of the Android Operating System and that MapMyRun was not available for my phone. In fact, to the present time, September 2010, there still isn't an update to the Android OS for the Motorola Backflip.
So aside from the operating system limitations with the Motorola Backflip, there are several applications preloaded by ATT that incur extra charges if you are not careful and accidently launch one. And these applications can not be deleted. This software is referred to as bloatware and it truly makes you feel like you don't have complete control over your phone.
To summarize, the Motorola Backflip from ATT is loaded with limitations right out of the box. Your selection of applications is extremely smaller than your peers with other Android phones, until the an update to the OS comes out. ATT also placed a block on the phone to "protect it's consumers" to disallow downloads that aren't Android Marketplace certified. Just another example of user limitations. It truly is a shame that the Motorola Backflip has so many downfalls because the phone itself is a nice sleek design, compact with full foldout keyboard and fullly functioning touchscreen that is very easy to use. I have high hopes that when the OS does get updated that may lift many of the limitations imposed on this phone by ATT and provide a far more fulfilling experience for all of us who currently aren't enjoying the Android experience Google intended for us.
