Warning-listening To Naysayers Can Damage Your Career Choices
Our loved ones want the best for us, but they may not know or understand where we are in our lives
, and what we want to achieve. There are those who are positive thinkers and those who are negative thinkers, also known as naysayers. There are those people in our lives who are great listeners and very supportive and there are those who are not. There are also those who think they know just about everything, as well as know what's best for everyone around them, including you!
This is why it's important to be careful who you share your new career plans with, as naysayers can have a negative effect on our self esteem and overall outlook.
Take a look at Judy's story.
Judy's dad is the perfect example of a naysayer. Not only has he always tended to see the negative side of things, he also has never had any problem telling people what they should or should not do. No matter whom you are or what the situation may be, he has always been glad to give you his opinion.
When my friend Judy was in high school and considering what she wanted to do with her life, she made the mistake of sharing her thoughts with her dad. When she told him she was thinking about going to college to become a psychologist, the first thing he told her was, "Do you know how many years you have to go to school to become a psychologist, or any doctor for that matter? You'd be in school until your late 20s, and that's if you went full time! Do you know how much medical school costs? You'd spend the rest of your life paying off student loans! Besides, what do you want to be a shrink for anyway? They just spout rubbish!"
Weeks later, when Judy told him her other option, which was to become a veterinarian, his response was, "Do you know how many veterinarians are out there already? Not only would you have to go to school for years on end, it would take you years to make any real money from that profession because there's too much competition! It would be a huge waste of time and money!"
So guess what she never ended up doing? That's right! Judy never went to college to become a psychologist or a veterinarian. In fact, when she graduated from high school, she didn't even go into college. Instead, she got a 9 to 5 job working as a secretary, moved out of her parents' house (as fast as she possibly could), and let life take her wherever it may for the next few years.
Now, don't get me wrong. Judy loves her father dearly. She tells me he is a great man and he always means well. But she learned over the years that when it comes to any plans or goals she wanted to put in place for myself, she needed to steer clear of telling her father about them!
Judy's not going to college after high school had everything to do with letting her dad's opinions get into her head. She didn't really know any better at the time, because she had grown up surrounded with that kind of negative thinking all her life. And even after she had moved out and was on her own, Judy often found herself following in her father's footsteps by telling herself negative things and became her own naysayer.
Judy never lost her love for psychology and for animals, and years later when she had done a lot of work on herself, she went back to her love of animals. A couple of years ago Judy and her husband set up a sanctuary for donkeys. They have been happily running it ever since.
I am sure you know someone in your life that is a lot like Judy's father. Regardless of their good intentions, they are still naysayers and their negativity can trip you up by causing you to doubt yourself and the plans you have made. So beware of this and be careful with whom you share your new career plans.
