Warplanes Offers F-15b Demonstrator Replica Model
Demonstrator is a variant of the F-15 Eagle
Demonstrator is a variant of the F-15 Eagle. During the 1960s, the US Air Force needed an air superiority fighter that has both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities. Apart from having exceptional speed, the Air Force was looking for an aircraft with superior maneuverability for dogfights and aerial combats. Three aviation companies submitted their proposals to the USAF. McDonnell Douglas, now known as Boeing, had the winning design.
McDonnell Douglas initially came up with two variants - the single-seat F-15A and the two-seat F-15B. The F-15 can distinguish low-flying targets with its look-down/shoot-down radar. It has a single canopy frame with clear vision forward to maximize visibility and a fixed wing on a wide fuselage for an effective lifting process. The F-15A made its first flight in July 1972 while the F-15B followed suit in July 1973.
The first F-15B was later converted into a short take-off and landing maneuver technology demonstrator aircraft. It assumed the role of technology demonstrator and is used to research on thrust vectoring and improved maneuverability. The aircraft was used to test methods on taking off and landing in short runways, including operating on wet and bomb-damaged runways. It aims to improve Air Base Operability, warplanes survival, and fighting capability on under-attacked airfields. The
F-15B Demonstrator can land on just 500 meters of runway compared to the 2,300 meters that the standard F-15 needs. The takeoff runway that it needs is 25% less than the standard.
The F-15B Demonstrator had canard foreplanes that improve vertical maneuverability and act as airbrakes. It also had thrust-vectoring nozzles that allow the aircraft to direct exhaust forward, outward or at a 20-degree angle of the aircraft. The canard foreplanes and thrust-vectoring nozzles also improve the low-speed performance of the F-15B Demonstrator. These features made the aircraft easy to maneuver, a capability that is very useful in short-range air combat.
In 1993, the F-15B Demonstrator was lent to NASA and became a part of the Advance Control Technology for the Integrated Vehicles research program. When the program concluded in 1999, the F-15B Demonstrator became the test bed for Intelligent Flight Control System and Lift and Nozzle Change Effects on Tail Shocks (LANCET) research programs until it was retired in 2008.
The F-15B Demonstrator has been instrumental in reaching great heights in the aviation technology. Through its participation in various research programs, it has helped the industry develop better performing aircraft and pushed the boundaries of aviation.
