Washing Patches

Embroidered patches are ordinarily worn on t shirts

, outdoor jackets, caps, as well as other clothing articles and bags. Biker clubs use them as do scout troops, sports teams, civic groups, and the like. But what happens when it comes time to do the laundry? Is it safe to throw embroidered patches in the washing machine? The good news is that yes, you can. But there is some secrets you have to know in order to prolong the life of your patches.

Color-Safe Threads

Most embroidered patches won't run or fade when they are washed because they are made with color-safe thread. The vast majority of the time, it will be fine to put your patch covered clothing in the wash with other items. You should notencounter any problems while using cold water and normal laundry detergent. But this isn't always the case as you can find quite a few exceptions.

The first is chlorine bleach. This may not be used that much these days but you will find still a number of people who prefer to use it. The problem is that chlorine causes all colors to fade, regardless of whether or not a patch was made with color-safe thread. You will probably notice that the color of the patch starts to fade after a few washes if you are using chlorine bleach. After a year or so the patches may completely fall off.

You'll find that you need to keep in mind the fact that color safe thread is not something that is used by all manufacturers. These kind ofthreads can fade or run in hot water with normal laundry detergent. This is exactly why it makes sense to ask about color safe thread before buying.

Edge Curling

The two types of border that are ordinarily used on embroidered patches are die cut or merrowed. Most normal shaped patches that include ovals, squares or circles will use merrowed borders. Patch manufacturers usually use die-cutting for oddly shaped patches or for patches that have intricate borders. You can tell the difference because the die-cut border is a lot sharper than the merrowed one. Also, on the subject of the edges curling the merrowed border is much more vulnerable.

When you wash and dry garments with patches, the punishment of the machines can cause the borders of your patches to curl up if they're not properly secured. If yu want to make sure that this doesnt happen, then try using a blanket stitch instead. Blanket stitches will always make sure that the patch is secure against the fabric and it will cover the border. If you want to use a different stitch then this is fine providing you you should always cover the border. Only by sewing down the border will you avoid curling.

Lastly, although many of today's patches have a heat-activated adhesive on the back, repeated machine washings over several years will almost certainly loosen the adhesive until the patch falls off. It may get to the stage where you might have to take the patch off the clothing and then sew it back on.
