Washing Silk Garments

Silk is a luxurious fabric that you should take proper care of if you want it to look new and vibrant for years to come

. It is quite easy to run the fabric if you are not careful. Luckily, there is no need to run it to the dry cleaner each time the material needs to be clean. Washing silk garments can be done in your home, if you follow the correct steps. You can even get a stain out of the silk fabric without ruining it!

Before you begin to clean the silk, test the soap or stain remover for color fastness. If the color starts to run, you need to stop and take the garment to the dry cleaner. If not, you are okay to proceed. For general cleaning, allow the fabric to soak for no more than 5 minutes. Make sure the water is lukewarm. If it is too hot or cold, the material may shrink or stretch. Create a rinse with one fourth cup of vinegar added to warm water. This will help to keep the silk fabric from becoming dull and worn.

If you are washing silk garments that have a stain, be sure to treat the blemish before you place it in the water. Instead, dab a bit of stain remover on the area using a paper towel. Remember to spot test the cleaner before using it in a noticeable area of the material. Let it sit for about 10 to 15 seconds, and then blot with a clean paper towel. You can then wash as usual.

In the event that you do not have any stain remover on hand, you can use a home remedy to get rid of the stains on your silk fabric. This works well on smaller garments such as ties and scarves. Put a thick towel on top of a warm radiator. Lay the stain on top towel and spray the area with just a bit of cold water. You only want to spray enough to moisten the fabric, not drench it. Blot with a clean kitchen towel and leave the silk on the radiator overnight. The stain will hopefully be gone the next morning.

Washing silk garments does not require a trip to the dry cleaners, even if you happen to stain the material. All you need to do is take proper care when cleaning it in your home and you can have it looking as good as new. Be sure that you test any cleaning supplies on a small unnoticeable area of the silk fabric before treating the entire garment. You should treat any stain before you do a general washing of the fabric to avoid ruining the fancy material. Be sure to follow the directions carefully to keep from ruining your lush fabric.
