. Chemical spills present serious health and safety hazards. Different levels and rates of exposure can lead to different adverse effects. For example, any toxic substance that enters the body by way of the mouth may or may not have adverse effects on the person. This is due to the fact that the toxicity of some substances only becomes apparent when taken in large doses, either over time or in one sitting. Some poisons that are ingested continuously within hours or even days may not be harmful in small amounts, but if a particularly sizable amount is ingested at one time, the results can prove fatal. For other chemicals, continuous intake may lead to the accumulation of the substance in the body. In this case, small doses ingested over time may result in a fatal dose. These chemicals, oils, fuels and other materials can cause pollution and health hazards. This is why adequate waste minimization is needed, to minimize the harm these would cause.

Improper or inadequate waste management can lead to untoward incidents occurring in a facility. Establishments in the industrial field utilize many substances in the process of manufacturing their products. The process of making and using these substances entail potentially fatal risks. Fires and dangerous fumes, for instance, are two common results of chemical reactions. Even the storage of such materials would require a particular set of equipment. Highly volatile substances require storage equipment that are resistant to their reactive properties. As such, special equipment must be in place to keep these materials these chemicals from leaching and leaking into floors.

Specifications regarding the management of wastes usually address large quantities of hazardous liquids or waste. There are many chemicals in the products and resulting wastes which are made and/or used in industrial facilities. The residue which these chemicals leave behind can, in general, linger within the area for many years. These can get into the cycles of natural systems in land, water, and air. They are often carried through the air by various agents across geographical borders, after which they are introduced into the soil and in water bodies. These substances then settle into sediments, and are afterwards consumed by and stored in the bodily systems of living organisms. The process in selecting the appropriate response methods should take into account the potential of each method to minimize the environmental consequence of such materials. The result of this selection should be the implementation of the particular method that reduces consequences in the given situation most effectively.
