In real life, escaping from prison isn't easy
, and people don't want it to be. Yet in the movies, prison escape plots can be highly entertaining. Audiences start to relate to the characters who are attempting to escape, and often they seem to be fairly innocent people who only would up in jail because they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some of Hollywood's more recent escape films include Con Air, the Fugitive, and The Count of Monte Cristo. Yet, none of those films compare to what have become some of the most classic films in the industry. To watch some of the best prison escape movies of all time, look for the following films on your satellite TV channels. The great thing about satellite TV is that you can watch these films from wherever you are, whether you live in Chicago or Miami.
1963's The Great Escape is the best prison escape film of all time. In this classic film, Steve McQueen stars as a rebellious soldier who is part of a group of allied POWs that are being held in a Nazi camp during WWII. Based on a true story, the Nazis had moved all of these POWs to a special camp they built that was supposed to be escape-proof. The POWs tire of being held against their will, so they develop an elaborate plot to dig a tunnel underneath one of their barracks, which they can then use to help a few hundred soldiers escape. The film starts out by showing how ingenious their escape plan was, as the allied soldiers emptied the extra dirt in various places such as the baseball field where they played daily. Once McQueen and 75 of his fellow POWs manage to get outside of the camp, the rest of the film follows their adventurous exploits as they all split up and try to escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. In addition to McQueen's standout performance, the film benefits from great performances from other talented actors such as James Garner and Richard Attenborough. Look for this amazing film on your satellite TV channels.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is a modern film that has quickly become a classic. Set in the 1940s, Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufrense, an innocent man convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. While serving two life sentences for their murders, Robbins meets Ellis Red Redding, played by the great Morgan Freeman, and the two develop a strong friendship. Freeman's character helps Robbins by getting him contraband items, which help Robbins enjoy his hobbies more. Throughout his prison term, Robbins assists other inmates by creating and expanding a library and encouraging them to educate themselves. One day, the prison guards awake to find that Robbins is not in his cell, and that he has escaped through a tunnel he spent a decade digging. Robbins had covered the tunnel with a poster that the guards had never looked behind. Once out of prison, Robbins is determined to help his friend Red, who is still in jail, and to get back at the corrupt prison guards.
