. If you want to catch this past year's Academy Award nominees for best foreign picture, satellite TV and its extended movie coverage is the way to go.
Each year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates five foreign films for its Best Foreign Picture award. While Italy and France lead the way in both nominations and total wins, most western European nations have won at least once, along with several African countries, a couple of Asian countries, and one South American country. The latest winner Argentina has one twice overall, representing South America in its only wins in the Academy Awards. This past year's nominees included, Ajami from Israel, The Milk of Sorrow submitted by Peru, A Prophet from France, and The White Ribbon from Germany. The Secret in Their Eyes from Argentina won. With all the movie channels offered by satellite TV you are bound to find these foreign films in your TV programming. Enjoy them in high definition if offered.
The Secret in Their Eyes follows a retired lawyer as he writes a novel looking for closure with regard to his love life and a particular murder case that was never fully resolved many years prior. It was widely heralded as the best Argentinian movie, and certainly one of the most popular in its history.
Ajami takes its name from an actual location in Israel shared by Christians, Jews, Palestinians, and Arabs. The movie deals with the heated, and often violent, relationships between these people groups that find themselves living together.
The Milk of Sorrow focuses on one woman to tell the story of a country and the culture, history, and people within in. The Milk of Sorrow is a supposed illness that one receives when nursing from a mother who had been or was being raped or abused during pregnancy. The person suffers mostly from fear. It alludes to the fear that women, indigenous peoples, and perhaps even all of Peruvians feel because of warfare, state brutality, and cultural violence and machismo. It is a well made film, worth one's time.
A Prophet tells the story of a young, perhaps nave, Arabic inmate who grows into a powerful boss within the prison's walls in order to direct the course of his future life once released. A difficult movie to watch due to the direct and true portrayal of life's darkness and grime common with French films, it is also well worth it.
The White Ribbon is a unique movie, shot in black and white, that is set in Germany just before World War I. It has been called a case study of pre-war Germany for its portrayal of distorted and corrupted values in the small German town where the children pay for the ideology and mistakes of their parents. It can be viewed as a story about a particular place in a specific time or more broadly as somewhat representative of Germany just before the World War.
