Total audience for online video has ballooned over the last few years, with the latest report by Neilsen showing that over 137 million Americans watched some kind of internet video during December 2009, a surge of 10.3 percent contrary to the same month in 2008. The 2009 viewers also streamed over 10.7 billion videos during the month, representing an increase of 11.8 percent versus the same time period in 2008. It is now getting easier and easier to watch television on your computer whereas just a very short time ago you would really have to search for your programs, and usually come up empty, now a days there are many avenues to find television programs and movies on the internet in a quality that rivals the broadcast versions. Two big leaps over the last two years have been in the computer design and manufacturing and in the software applications that allows you to watch TV on your computer The first is in the computers design: The best way to view television on your computer is by connecting your television through HDMI directly to your computer. Computer manufactures are starting to realize that there is a need for people to connect their PCs via HDMI directly to their TV's and as such have started to construct different systems that have an HDMI connector on them. This allows consumers to get both the audio and video from their computers to play back on their TVs over a single cable. Gone are the days when you needed to run both video and audio cables from your PC to your TV. Another upgrade that computer manufactures are beginning to incorporate into newer computers are remote controls, which allows you to actually use your computer like a set-top box, enabling viewers to sit back on their couch and control their computer without a keyboard and mouse. The new advancement in software allows users the look and feel of how they are used to watching television along with a standardize programming guide and DVR accessibility ..plus a WHOLE lot more. Viewers can now use their included remote controls to scan thousands of channels of television programming, movies, games, music, sports, pictures, home videos, you name it anything that you can now do on your PC you can run on your TV, except that the involvement is a lot more like TV and a lot less like a PC. Some of the behemoths in the industry you may be familiar with while others are starting to come into their own. YouTube has been around for a few years and leads the pack with billions of videos viewed monthly, second in the race with more quality TV programming is Hulu. For online viewing of movies Netflix has topped the pack over the last few years. You can literally watch pretty much any type of TV on your PC or movies online and have the type of expanded experience that regular television just cant offer and without all the costs of cable or satellite. Once you know all the details that surround setting up such a system the rest is a piece of pie.
