Of course, many times people think the academy gets it wrong and that other films may have been more worthy than the ones that actually win. But in the overall scheme of things, there have been a large number of amazing films that deserved to win Academy Awards. Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 masterpiece, The Godfather, is often called the best movie of all time and it's not difficult to see why. Although the film only won three Academy Awards, it was nominated for another eight. It's clear that the film deserved to win Best picture that year, as it did, but as audiences look back, they'll continue to question why Coppola didn't win Best Director. Most film critics agree that Coppola completely changed the way many directors work and that his contribution to the field cannot be underestimated. Unfortunately that year, the award for Best Director went to Bob Fosse for Cabaret, which is an entertaining movie but hasn't affected audiences or the film industry in the powerful way that The Godfather has. The academy must have realized their mistake because they attempted to rectify it two years later by awarding Coppola the Best Director Oscar for his 1974 work, The Godfather Two. Just as Coppola was unfairly overlooked for his work on the first Godfather film, Alfred Hitchcock was overlooked for his entire career. It really is a tragedy that such a prolific director, who also changed the film industry and the work that directors do forever. As the Master of Suspense, Hitchcock was responsible for making each and every one of the films he was behind entertaining and successful. The masterful Hitchcock was nominated in 1940 for his work on Rebecca, and although he didn't win (John Ford won for The Grapes of Wrath), Rebecca took home the Best Picture award that year, which must have been somewhat rewarding to Hitchcock. 2008's Slumdog Millionaire is the rare case of a great film actually winning all of the awards that it deserved. This heart-wrenching film took home Eight Oscars including: Best Film, Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Original Score, Original Song, Sound, and Screenplay. It doesn't get much better than that, and film creators couldn't ask for anything more. This incredible film tells the fictional story of a young Indian man who goes on to win a million dollars on India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, but who is then accused of cheating because of his background as an impoverished teen from India's slums.
