After a serial killer with the named Red John mercilessly murdered Patrick Jane's precious and beloved wife and daughter, Jane felt so ravaged and pointless that all he wanted to do is to dedicate his whole life in hunting down and killing Red John. And he can only do that by giving up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and join the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and become the consultant of the team responsible for the investigation of Red John's case, which was led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. This was the only way that Jane believes he could hang on to make his revenge and gain justice for his family.

Meanwhile, the CBI also gets privilege with Patrick Jane's joining into the team. By using Jane's exceptional gift for observation and his incredible mentalist tricks, the team was able to close an unprecedented number of cases. However, Jane's unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbon's head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse at the same time.
