Watching Beyond The Obvious- A Closer Look At Domestic Abuse

Domestic violence is a habitual pattern of violent behavior in a relationship used

by 1 partner in order to gain power and control over another intimate partner. This is the definition given by the US Office on Violence Against Women. Domestic violence can inflict anyone anywhere in the world despite of race, age, religion and gender. Based on statistics, the primary cause of injury to women is domestic violence. The number of reported violence exceeds that of muggings, vehicle accidents and rapes combined. To illustrate the severity of this issue, a woman is assaulted every nine seconds in the US and more than 3 women are murdered either by their husbands or boyfriends daily. Why is household violence so rampant in the society? What are the factors that give rise to such violence?

Studies on domestic violence showed many factors that contribute to such aggressive behaviour. One is poverty and low economic conditions. Economic problems like job loss and failures in economic pursuits contribute to a buildup of negative emotions and agitation. Dealing with financial problems can be so overwhelming to some people that they release anger and disappointment by inflicting pain towards their partners. Another contributing factor is the predisposition and family history of a person. Someone who has witnessed domestic violence as a child or had been a victim of domestic violence as a child is more likely to abuse a partner as he grows older. Children who grow up in dysfunctional homes may tend to show normal growth and behavior but a subconscious aspect of their development may prove otherwise. At times, involvement of substance abuse like alcohol can trigger abusive behavior. Alcohol treatment programs include family history as a contributing factor that may link violent behavior and alcohol abuse.

Substance abuse alone like alcoholism and drug abuse can be a factor of domestic violence. These substances can have a great impact on the central nervous system and alter its normal functions. Slight provocation and little arguments can blow up and cause physical abuse and torment. A study conducted at the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addiction showed a significant and comparatively similar relationship between men's alcohol consumption and violence against women. The respondents of this study include men in domestic violence program and men who entered in alcohol treatment. Results of this study have helped many clinical psychologists to consider alcohol consumption as an element in domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse may still be a long battle to fight but awareness of the factors that cause it can greatly help people everywhere. The complexity of human behavior can only be dealt one aspect at a time and this information proves to be helpful in understanding domestic abuse.
