You can't always see water damage. It is often down the backs of sink cabinets or beneath cased in baths. That is why some of the biggest problems caused can be mold and rot, as the damage spreads before you detect it. Finding the problem is the first step towards effective water damage repair.
Mold
Mold loves damp, dark areas, so this water damage may be hidden and difficult to find. It can often grow behind wallpaper, under carpets etc. Even above ceiling tiles! You must do a thorough mold inspection of your home if you are to find it all, including looking into the very structure and fabric of the building. This can be tricky, so you may want to hire a professional to carry out the mold inspection for you.
Discovering Water Damage
First of all, when trying to decide if you have a mold problem in your home, can you smell the mold? It often has a very distinctive musty smell. Next, do you have any leaks? Again, check to see if you can smell damp in this area.
Mold can be harmful, so don't touch something you suspect to be mold and certainly don't get too close and breathe it in. Always use protective gear before you do a mold inspection and considers calling in a certified mold inspector.
Rot!
Water damage under carpets can cause rotting of tack strips and floors. That is a prime place for mold growth to occur too. Also, if your walls get damp and especially if there is moisture under the wallpaper and this mixes with the wallpaper glue, you may well develop mold in these areas.
