Water: How Important Is It? by:Carlos Regueira

Are you one of those people who always has a water bottle in their hand

? Do friends, family and co-workers always comment on how much water you drink? If yes, good for you. If not, maybe you don't realize how important it is to stay hydrated.

So here is a rundown on how important your water intake is for your body, health and fitness.

Water makes up 60% of your total body weight and allows for over 50% of all of the chemical reactions in the body. On a daily basis your body loses 1-3 quarts of water from excretion, respiration, chemical reactions and perspiration. At a 2% dehydration rate, the body's ability to work and function decreases from 12-15%. So this is why it's important to rehydrate by drinking your daily dose of water.

Negative side effects of dehydration

Now you know what your body does with water and why it's so important to drink it. So now let's take a look at what can happen if your body becomes dehydrated. Some of the negative side effects that dehydration can cause in your body includes:

* Increase in body temperature

* Increase in heart rate

* Weight loss

* Constipation

* Skin dryness

* Wrinkles

* Dry mouth

* Brittle nails and hair

* Decrease in urination, which leads to a buildup of toxins in the body-leading to infection and organ failure

How much water you should drink

Then the burning question becomes: how much water should you drink to stay optimally hydrated? Scientific research suggests that the daily intake of water should be 8-12 glasses of water. Obviously, if you work outside, are active at home or at work, workout longer than usual, then a higher intake of water is required for your body to use. Once you find the suitable amount for your body, drink it every day. Remember, being consistent is the key to staying hydrated.
