These bad boys were once PIVOTAL for rural living as a means of both storing and gathering water. Although times have changed, some things stay the same as people are still opting to have these units installed in their humble abodes to satisfy their "inner greeny" so that they can both save water and money. In general, water storage containers are simply units that allow for us to safely store water for a prolonged period of time so that we can access it at a later point in time.

So were in the 21st century, how is this supposed to apply to me now?

Lets be honest here. Without water, life as we know it would cease to exist. Water is one of the most abundant elements on our planet (making up about 70% of the earths composition).

Be that as it may, it doesnt really mean much to us if we have no means of accessing it in times of need. The best option for us is to ensure we have an accessible stockpile for a "rainy day".

To put the need for water in perspective, the average human being can survive days, if not weeks without food. On the other hand however, take away our water and we would be lucky to make it through the week.

Every organism relies on water on both a physiological and a functional level.

Water breaks down our food and helps us pass the waste as well as helps us deliver chemicals to different parts of our bodies. On the flip side, we require water for its chemical makeup to ensure an optimum level of osmosis in our bodies.

Okay I get it water is important. How do I go about the best way to store water?

The methods are plenty. The route you chose to go really depends on your personal preference.

To really get down to the core of it however, there are both paid and "free" methods of storing water to cater to your personal needs.

Should you wish to purchase a water storage unit, you would be able to find an array of suppliers in our local area that will be willing to offer a quote. While you have them here, ask them to provide you with a cost/benefit analysis so you can judge how long it will take you to see a ROI.

Another good tip I can offer is to contact your local council to see if they are offering any form of subsidisation for installing these units. Many governments encourage the installation of these units (by way of a cash subsidy) as they both allow for a reduced carbon footprint and a more sustainable environment.

If you are not quite ready for the paid option, that is perfectly fine. Simply purchase a large sealable PVC container from your friendly hardware store and you can replicate this method for (basically) free. Ensure that these buckets are sealable so to ensure that once you have been able to collect a large amount of water, you can seal the bucket up so to ensure that contaminants cannot enter and spoil your haul! Now this water on average cannot be used for drinking, but is great for use in washing your car, or watering plants or even taking baths yourself if you were so inclined. Now you can use all the clean fluoridised drinking water for its namesake.. Thats right guys.. DRINKING!!
