Water-based Polyurethane
Six Advantages Of Water-Based Polyurethane
1) Water-Based is More Durable
Our preferred water-based polyurethane was evaluated vs. the leading oil-based polyurethan employing the Taber Abrasion machine. This machine tests a finish's ability to withstand abrasion like scuffing and erosion from regular surface friction. According to test results, water-based polyurethane is five times more resistant to abrasion than leading commercial oil-based urethane.
2) Less VOC
Certain solids and liquids can expel VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). These substances can adversely affect your health. They also join with other elements in the presence of sunlight to form smog, a major air pollutant. Thus the government has begun restricting the amount of VOC's that can be included in a number of products.
*Waterbased coatings usually have half as much VOC content as the traditional oil-based polyurethane finishes.
*Basic Coatings waterbased surface finishes produce less odor than fragrant OMU's.
*Green: Many of Basic(R) Coatings water-based finishes satisfy strict government rules and the LEED green building requirements.
3) Faster Dry Times
Two to three hours is all it takes for a water-based finish to dry. Oil-based finishes will require between 8 and 24 hours to dry. Because of the quicker drying time, multiple coats can be applied in one day so jobs are done faster and your surfaces are useable sooner.
4) Faster Cure Times
A week is the cure time for a water-based finish, while it takes 30 days for an oil-based coating to sure. Our preferred water-based finish is 90% cured in only 24 hours, which means less downtime before the area is safe for use.
5) Less Yellowing
Water-based finishes maintain a clear, non-yellowing physical appearance. Oil-based finishes can turn an unsightly yellow with time and UV exposure. If the deep, enhanced look of oil-based finishes is what your project requires, we use a water-based finish that includes an organic tung oil for deeper color but will retain clarity over time without yellowing. This option is the best of both worlds.
6) Non-Flammable
Petroleum distillates, That are included in oil-based finishes, are highly Flammable. Because our coating are water-based, they are neither flammable or combustible. The fumes of OMU's are also combustible or flammable. Anything that has OMU residue on it is required to be stored in safety containers to prevent combustion.
