Water misting: the next step for fire suppression systems
Water misting systems are a major growth area in terms of fire suppression systems. These systems take the traditional sprinkler system a stage further by improvements in efficiency and in water usage. Water misting systems suppress fire in three ways: by absorbing heat; by oxygen depletion; and by blocking radiant heat.
Water has always been the primary medium of fire suppression, due to it's non-toxic nature. Water is safe, environmentally friendly, and it also has a natural ability to absorb heat, making it the ideal medium for fire suppression. By manipulation of pressure and varying the nozzle design of a misting system, the effective surface area of the water droplet can be increased, thereby creating a much larger area of spray to cover the fire. The droplets are converted to steam, which is extremely effective at absorbing very high temperatures and blocking radiant heat. The mist created protects against radiated heat and helps to prevent fire spread. It is the ability of small droplets to create steam at the source of the fire which makes fine misting systems so much more efficient than traditional sprinkler methods of fire suppression.
As a result the efficiency of the water's energy absorption is greatly increased, which obviously means that water wastage is decreased. Put simply, it does not take large supplies of water mist to create a large amount of steam.
Watermist fire suppression systems can be delivered via dedicated pump systems or by stand alone cylinder batteries. An advantage of watermist fire suppression systems is that the lower volumes of water required, in comparison to fire sprinkler systems, means that pipework diameters and storage capacities are also reduced. Another advantage of the misting system is that in some instances the environmentally friendly mist acts to cleanse the smoke from the air. This aids visibility and helps to reduce the toxicity of smoke.
Water misting fire suppression systems are particularly suited to certain industrial situations, as well as off-shore and shipping environments. The protection from electric shock offered by the misting nozzle, along with the misting system's advantages in cooling machinery make the system ideally suited to these situations.
Nobel Fire Systems offer the full range of totally environmentally friendly Watermist Fire Suppression systems. The watermist fire suppression systems operate over a wide range of pressures and flows to achieve different performance, capabilities and functions.
Nobel Fire Systems supply a range of watermist fire suppression systems which have many world wide approvals for both land and marine applications.
