Waterfalls in Kerala

The scenic beauty and abundance in hills and mountains make the state of Kerala a very picturesque holiday spot. The large and small waterfalls splashing down the mountain side mask the woods of the Western Ghats while adding to nature's beauty. Considering its God's own country, the waterfalls seem like a blessing from nature sent straight from above and quite literally. The Tusharagiri, Athirapally, Palaruvi and Vazhachal are amongst the most important waterfalls in the state, having many vacationers dropping by. It is best to visit these waterfalls during or post the monsoons and in winter.

Athirapally Waterfalls:- Situated around 78kms from Kochi, the Athirapally waterfall is at the gateway to the Sholayar ranges. At a height of 80 feet, it is known to be very popular among picnickers and best visited between 8am and 6pm. In a forest location, the waterfall meets the Chalakkudy river after its drop. Keeping a tab of water release to the Poringal dam will also allow you to see the waterfall flourish. The best way to get to the Athirapally Waterfalls is by flying up to Cochin International Airport located at Nedumbassery to then take the road NH 47 until Chalakudy Junction.

Vazhachal Waterfalls:- A beautiful site offering a very scenic view, Vazhachal is in close proximity to Athirapally. Even this waterfall drops into the Chalakkudy river and is in the heart of the dense green woods. In the thick of the green Sholayar forest, travelers will enjoy the cool and misty waters with a rocky terrain as the backdrop. The waterfall is a drive away from Vazachal very close to Thrissur.

Thusharagiri Waterfalls:- Found in the Western Ghats, the Thusharagiri waterfalls are seen plummeting down the snow-clad mountains. In the backdrop of the ghats, the waterfalls are created by the diversion of the Chalippuzha river. It includes three waterfalls, the highest among which is the Thenpara that descends from an altitude of around 75 meters. Approximately 11km from Kodechery, waterfalls are easy to reach by both air and road. Take a flight to Karipur International airport at Calicut or travel 52km from Kozhikode through Kunnamangalam and Thamarassery. By rail, visitors will have to travel 60km from Kozhikode Railway station. The waterfall vicinity is most popular for trekking.

Palaruvi waterfalls:- Also known as the 'stream of milk', these waterfalls are situated at a distance of approximately 75kms from Kollam. With the remains of legendary temples around, the water gushing down these waterfalls is said to be of medicinal value. The best time to visit these waterfalls is between June and January. Kollam is the nearest railway station to get to the airport with the closest airport being Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
