With the I.T department being one of the most important areas of an company these days, computer based jobs, including GIS (geospatial information systems) posts have become more popular. Especial in the environmental sector, there has been an increase in a need for such skills in the last few years, thus if you intend to involve yourself in the environmental field, gaining GIS skills will help your prospects.

Environmental charities and businesses have high standards for their employees, as they have to spend the limited amount of money they have well, on a trusted employee with the necessary skills. Bearing this is mind, to successfully apply for a post; you will need the relevant experience and qualifications, or the willingness to train for those qualifications at least. So how do you fully successfully meet the demanding criteria?

Experience, experience and experience

Environmental posts not just need the relevant knowledge; they need you to fulfill the role practically. Getting the practical experience is key to learning the program used, such as Autocad Land Desktop. Learning a large GIS program is by no means easy, thus learning it slowly but surely will help you to attain the GIS mapping skills needed in the long term. Experience will also help you to understand any gaps in knowledge that need to be closed up and will also show you what it is like to work in a professional GIS environment. It will enable you to have overall knowledge of the job, not just the skills necessary.

GIS training

Not many Universities, even those with environmental courses, go through GIS training. University will often demonstrate the basics of GIS, but nothing more, leaving a massive gap in GIS skills. Thus anyone who wishes to go for a role involving GIS from University will need some GIS training. You can train for GIS through a number of methods:

*Volunteering in a GIS department,

*Getting a hold of GIS software,

*Using computer based training or training guides for GIS training courses (i.e. cad courses); or

*Alternatively, you could attend a GIS course or seminar.

Tailoring your CV to GIS posts

After gaining relevant experience and skills, it's time to tailor your CV to GIS posts. Mention all of your experience and education, whether it's accredited or self training (i.e. home based cad courses). Also mention where you have gained other skills important to the post, such as data collection and representation skills and communication skills. Focus mainly on your GIs experience, but speak about how your experiences elsewhere nicely feed into it.
