Ways To Reach - Jammu To Amritsar

Jammu lies between the Himalayan range in the north and the plains of Punjab in the south

. Set against the snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountains, Jammu becomes the administrative capital of Jammu and Kashmir in winters due to heavy snowfall in Srinagar. Jammu was named after King Jambu Lochan.

The main sightseeing destinations in and around Jammu are Raghunath Mandir (largest temple complex in north India), popular Vaishno Devi Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple, Wali Mata Temple, Panchbakhtar Temple, Gadhadharji Temple, Bahu Fort, Amar Mahal, Mubarak Mandi Palace Complex, Dogra Art Museum, and Mansar and Surinsar Lakes.

The distance from Jammu to Amritsar is about 207 km (by rail). The most important spiritual and religious centre of the Sikhs is the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The name of the city derives from the name of the pool around the Golden Temple. The literal meaning of Amritsar is 'holy pool of nectar' (Amrit means elixir and Sar means lake or pool). The sacred Adi Granth scripture is kept in Harmandir Sahib. Akal Takht (meaning The Timeless) is situated directly opposite to Harmandir Sahib.

Among other attractions in Amritsar are Jallianwala Bagh, Ram Tirth (birthplace of Luv and Kush, sons of Lord Rama) and Mata Temple.

Amritsar can be reached from Jammu by air, rail and road. Both Jammu and Amritsar have airports. But it is not advisable to travel such a short distance from Jammu to Amritsar by air because it is both cumbersome and expensive.

There are two direct daily trains from Jammu to Amritsar. They are Jammu Tawi-Rourkela Tata Nagar Express No.18102 and Jammu Tawi-Bhatinda Express No.19226. The first train is more convenient to travel from Jammu to Amritsar since it leaves in the afternoon and reaches the destination at 7.10 in the evening. Jammu Tavi-Bhatinda Express, which leaves Jammu at 9.25 p.m., reaches the destination in the odd hours of the morning at 1.55.

The road mode of transport is convenient to travel from Jammu to Amritsar. The private buses charge a rate ranging from Rs.175 to Rs.300 for the trip depending on the type of vehicle. The bus takes more than four hours to reach the destination from Jammu.

On the other hand, the cab charges a rate ranging from Rs.12 to Rs.20 per kilometre (for one way) depending on the type of car. The taxi car is suitable to travel for parties, families with kids and senior citizens. The cab takes three hours to travel from Jammu to Amritsar. The Jammu-Amritsar road route passes through (with distance in kilometres from Jammu in brackets) Samba (33 km), Hira Nagar (48 km), Kathua (77 km), Pathankot (100 km), Dina Nagar (124 km), Gurdaspur (136 km), Dhariwal (149 km), Batala (168 km) and Amritsar (207 km).

Travellers have plenty of facility to take a trip from Amritsar to Chandigarh and Mumbai to Chandigarh .
