Ways To Stay Healthy After Alcohol Rehabilitation
After the alcoholics have gone through therapy in alcohol treatment centers
, they need to have a diet that is not only balanced but also nutritious. Prolonged alcohol addiction causes nutritional deficiencies and may cause liver damage and mental problems. Post-alcoholic diets are needed to enhance the physical condition of the client to participate well in after care or support groups and avoid relapse.
Diet Quality
The Journal of the American Dietetic Association performed a study on 15,000 American adults who have an increase consumption of alcoholic beverages. They have discovered that these individuals suffered poor appetite and have an issue with nutrition. According to Dr. Rosalind A. Breslow of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, those who are alcoholics have poorer food choices than those who do not drink. Alcoholics eat more unhealthy foods than eating vegatables and fruits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and National Cancer Institute has also been a part of this research.
Detoxification
Detoxification is done to help alcoholics withdraw safely and securely from alcohol. During the process, clients often experience mild to severe symptoms of withdrawal like anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting and headaches. These symptoms may cause loss of appetite and may be the root of low levels of nutrients taken in by the alcoholics. Doctors recommend vitamins and minerals supplements along with a healthy diet during this stage to keep the clients from developing deficiencies and diseases. Inpatient alcohol treatment programs offer detoxification but it can also be carried out a hospital setting.
Well-Balanced Meals
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the diet programs for the alcoholics must be low fat, rich in protein, carbohydrates and fiber. Alcoholics experience more feelings of hunger than normal and they might interpret this as alcohol cravings. It would be recommended that patients should have scheduled meals to avoid alcohol cravings. Improve appetite will help the patient to attain healthier recovery. It could be achieve through healthy meals and snacks.
Low-fat Diet
Alcoholics must avoid fatty foods and substitute it with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts to prevent weight gain and lifestyle diseases. A healthy snack to minimize alcohol cravings are sweet potatoes. Drinking plenty of water will help reduce the dehydration as a side-effect from alcohol addiction.
Food Supplements
Alcoholics should have vitamin and mineral supplements to avoid certain nutritional deficiencies that could be dangerous if not dealt with immediately, according to UMMC. Post-alcohol addiction diet must have enough vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, selenium and B vitamins. Prolonged alcohol addiction often needs Thiamine or vitamin B1 to achieve optimal recovery. Thiamin deficiency may cause brain damage in prolonged alcohol addiction.
