Atopic dermatitis is form of eczema and is an itchy, inflammatory skin condition. Many people show symptoms as a child although some have reported starting as adults. Low doses of Methotrexate therapy has been suggested as an effective method of controlling eczema.

This drug is also used to treat severe psoriasis that uncontrolled by other medications. Methotrexate is also used in conjunction with other treatments to treat severe active rheumatoid arthritis that also couldn't be controlled by other means. It is even used to treat certain cancers like in the uterus, breast cancer, lung cancer, certain types of lymphoma, and leukemia. It works because it is able to slow the growth of psoriasis and cancer cells.

Studies on adults with new-onset dermatitis who didn't respond to prolonged therapy with oral antihistamines and corticosteroid creams were treated with this drug. In this study, the drug was given in a dose of 10-20 mgs orally once a week in conjunction with folic acid supplements taken five days a week. All of the patients responded positively to the drug. The first sign of healing showed after three to seven weeks. Six of the nine patients showed complete remission after three months of treatment, and three patients showed major improvement. However, one of the patient's conditions became worse after achieving a complete response and the drug was removed completely. No serious side effects were recorded during the study.

The use of this drug may cause side effects. If you feel any dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, sore gums, red eyes, loss of hair or appetite, consult with your doctor. Some of the side effects can be very serious. If you experience any seizures, confusion, blurred or loss of vision, confusion, or weakness, consult with you doctor immediately. Tell your doctor if you or your partner plan to become pregnant and use a reliable method of birth control.

Although use of low dose Methotrexate has been effective in the treatment of eczema, you have to make sure you are careful. Always follow your doctor's instructions and guidelines. If you feel any unusual symptoms, consult your doctor right away.
