The dwindling of the once sturdy economy has brought more people to realise the value of spending right and saving for the rainy days. This Christmas season is no exception because today, more and more people are considering the idea of re-gifting. Blame it on Jerry Seinfeld for coining this new practical way of giving pre-owned items as gifts.

But although re-gifting has become a widely accepted practice towards sensibleness, one must still consider some factors before jumping right in to giving previously owned articles. There is a difference between delicately passing down a pre-loved item and decidedly getting rid of an unwanted thing.

The Item's Worth

Never mind that the gift is one of a kind or a limited edition but mainly it should have significance either for the giver or the receiver. Preferably, although pre-owned, the gifts must be unused such as un-opened bottle of perfume or wine, unused bathroom essentials, cosmetics and so on. Similarly, in giving away an old and used item, it should at least be something the receiver wants. For instance, a classic book that he or she has always wanted to have or a pair of vintage stilettos that is considered a fashion treasure.

The Item's Condition

Not all new and unopened items are best re-gifted. Firstly, expiration dates must be considered. It is both insulting and demeaning to gift an item that's past its fresh or working stage. Not only can it cause allergic reaction but it can be poisonous as well.

For the old but nonperishable items such as books, it is best if they are not tattered, unreadable, or unusable. Same as with perishable items, it is demeaning to give in poor condition gifts. Once certain of the good condition of the gifts, people can enhance their appearance by using different packaging or wrapping them in beautiful wrappers.

Must Be Given with in Good Faith

Practicality is one big reason to pursue re gifting this Christmas. With it one does not have to borrow money or find quick sources of fast money just to afford buying gifts for friends and loved ones. Given the economic situation, these are not the wise things to do.

However, re-gifting shouldn't be, in any way, just a means of getting rid of old stuff from one's closet. It must be done with good intentions because this is still, and will remain to be, the essence of giving.
