Absenteeism in the workplace costs businesses and the economy as a whole dearly. Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) suggests that absenteeism costs each business over 650 per year per employee. Some firms, for example, organise back-to work interviews when staff return to work. All workplaces are advised to have an absence policy. It should be developed with staff, legal professionals, trade bodies and unions. Having specific policies and procedures clearly in place can deter staff from pulling sickies.

Promote healthy living Providing support and incentives for your staff to live healthily can improve health and morale and reduce absenteeism. Example schemes include subsidised gym membership, free fruit, stop-smoking programmes and healthy canteen food. Reward good attendance A reward for staff with a good attendance record can motivate staff. This could be a monthly or annual bonus for members of staff with over a 95% attendance, for example.
