We All Need To Get There

No matter your physical limitations all citizens have the right to be able to access public buildings whenever they need to

. In response to this demand, the United States government has enacted legislation that requires all public buildings to cater to handicap individuals. This accessibility is achieved by the construction of handicap ramps and wheelchair lifts. These devices ensure that handicap individuals are able to access areas that are elevated from the ground floor.

Despite the accommodations made by government agencies there are still a large number of private buildings which cannot be accessed by handicap individuals. Many of these buildings are extremely old. As a result, the cost of the installation of wheelchair lifts would be substantial. Unfortunately the cost deters most building owners from making this type of improvement.

A handicap individual should not have to be limited to traveling only to public buildings or buildings which have the resources available to install the proper wheelchair lift. In many towns, the availability of handicap accessible buildings is limited. As a result, critical businesses are set up in places where there is no possible way for a handicap individual to meet with them. This not only affects the business owners ability to attract new customers, but also greatly prohibits the handicap individual from seeking the services that they need.

It is time for our government to take further action in ensuring that all buildings have the ability to easily transport handicap individuals from one floor to another.

The government has long been placed on notice of this growing issue. As a result, some legislation has been passed to provide assistance to building owners in reaching full handicap accessibility. However, more needs to be done, if we as a society are to advance our message that we are a nation that caters to all.

To this end, grass roots movements need to be organized to raise the money needed to install wheelchair lifts, elevators and/or wheelchair ramps in all of our buildings. This is a substantial task but, with the power of many, it is a task that is well within reach.

All it takes is the movement of a few to raise the awareness to a level of substantial action. Given that there are over 250 million people in our country alone, we have the ability, one dollar at time, to make substantial change. It is important that we, as citizens of this great country, heed the call and step forward to perform our civic duty.
