Not so long ago strength training exercise was associated only with athletes

. Certainly the world of muscle toning with intentional exercise was relatively unknown except for a group of people called 'bodybuilders'. The world has changed in regards to our activity levels, technological advancements, changes in society and our own personal choices as we continue to strive for 'easy, convenient and comfortable' lifestyles. Although automation and technology make our lives effortless and allow us more leisure time a price is paid by muscular systems as fewer demands are placed on them.

Just a few generations ago farming and manufacturing involved hard physical labor and children spent their leisure time in an active manner instead of being parked virtually motionless playing video and computer games like they are today. Women were also more active cooking meals from scratch without a microwave and doing housework without the appliances we have today.

At the same time as this general decrease in activity levels food became less expensive, more abundant and more widely obtainable. It is easy to see how this combination of events has led to the epidemic of overweight people that are common in our world today.

The human body is a miracle of adaptability and is capable of altering itself in response to the load placed on it in such a way that future similar loads will be less stressful to it. And the reverse is true, it can and will adapt to having little to no demands placed on it becoming weaker, frailer, less capable and more prone to disease.


So in contrast to earlier times, when much of each day was spent doing physically demanding activities the muscular systems of men, women and children were stimulated vigorously which is what the human body is engineered for. Going out of the way to engage in muscle strengthening exercise was generally not necessary to keeps one's strength and fitness.

Today however, unless you are very active in your job there is just no way you can get enough muscular activity to ensure optimal health and the maintenance of your functional abilities. You may have to consider giving back a little of the leisure time you have gained through mechanization and technology and take up a proper strength training program to purposely stress your muscular system.

This will make sure you keep your strength which is a vital component of your overall health. Just a couple of sessions each week is all that is needed and the benefits are wide reaching.


An increased metabolic rate (your body's engine) means the burning of more calories will produce more energy so you will have more 'get up and go'. Strong muscles lead to strong bones along with a stronger immune system to protect you from disease.

If you are not currently on a strength training program get yourself started. It can slow and even reverse many of the components we feel are related to the aging process. It is without question the single most effective way to improve health and lengthen life.

Proper exercise can rejuvenate your body and mind like nothing else can and the sooner you get started the sooner you can reap the multiple health benefits.
