Weather Driving Tips

The summer is officially over, and the wet weather has set in

. Again. This is not only disappointing for all of us sun worshippers, but has the possibility to cause more accidents in Britain's roads and bump up our Car Insurance Quotes.

But there are some tips you can apply to make your drive home from work slightly safer, and therefore avoid any accidents waiting to happen. The present danger is simply the sheets of rain, but as the winter draws in, the snow and ice will also pose a problem.

When driving in the rain, the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM) recommend that you apply a much greater stopping distance between you and the car in front, especially in traffic, and take care when driving through water, as you cannot see the depth and what lays beneath, like drains and potholes.

When driving in the icy or snowy weather, the stopping distances and space between cars should be tripled, to avoid shunting. If you want to protect your no claims bonus by avoiding accidents then you should plan your journey carefully, choosing roads that are used more often and therefore gritted, and avoiding early mornings when statistically there is a much higher chance of accident, due to the gritting vans not being out and large lorries being on the roads.

As ever in the bad weather, if you can avoid taking a trip then do so. If you have to leave the house, then try to do car shares with colleagues to minimise the amount of cars on the roads.
